GAME VIEWING, BIRDING While the Doorndraai Dam is popular with anglers and watersport enthusiasts, nature-lovers are drawn more to the surrounding reserve. Lying among the foothills, of the Waterberg, the 7 229 ha Doorndraai Dam Nature Reserve consists mainly of hilly country, with numerous kloofs and waterfalls. The dominant vegetation is sour bushveld, with a considerable variety of tree species. The main function of this conservation area is to protect rare game species such as sable antelope and tsessebe, but a variety of other species may also be seen. The area around the dam can be rewarding for bird-watchers. Location: South-central part of the province; south-west of Potgietersrus. Access: From Potgietersrus travel 17 km southwards on the N1, turn right onto the tarred Sterkriver road, and flow this road to the signposted turn-off to the reserve. From Naboomspruit travel northward on the N1 for 36 km, then turn left onto the above-mentioned tarred Sterkrivier road. A single internal gravel road running the length of the reserve is open to the public. Accommodation: Camping site with ablution facilities and outdoor fireplaces (R7 per stand per night); hiking trail huts for up to 10 people. Other facilities: Picnic sites; watersports (boat permits can be obtained at the office); swimming; fishing; game-viewing; overnight and shorter hiking trails (must be booked at least 2 months I advance).
